Over the past few days, we’ve struggled with the brutal and senseless killing of George Floyd in Minnesota. This latest horror in a long history of racism, social injustice and violence against African Americans provokes pain, grief, fear and outrage. It highlights the work that still needs to be done to eliminate the discrimination faced every day by marginalized groups, and to create a society that is fair and inclusive.
We have to do more than witness these injustices –from the tragic violence against African Americans to the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color. We must confront ignorance with knowledge, hatred with love, and complacency with action forequality. And each of us needs to acknowledge our own biases and privilege and create change from within. Every voice raised against racism chips away at its power.
At Illumina, our commitment to diversity, inclusion and respect for all is a core part of our culture. We also recognize there is much work that still needs be done to create a fair and inclusive society. To support our employees, we are connecting with our employee resource groups, establishing a platform for more executive round table discussions, connecting our teams to our Employee Assistance and wellness programs, and reviewing programmatic opportunities.
To support equality and fairness in our communities, The Illumina Corporate Foundation is donating to the Equal Justice Initiative and offering a 200% match on all employee donations to organizations committed to justice andlasting social change. We know these are small steps on the journey and we’ll continue to build on them going forward. Please be kind to yourselves and each other.
