SAN DIEGO, July 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Illumina Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN) today announced two awards recognizing the company's leadership in sustainability practices and as an employer of choice. TIME named Illumina to its World's Most Sustainable Companies list for the second year in a row, and U.S. News & World Report named Illumina to its Best Companies to Work For list. The awards highlight the company's continued leadership in corporate citizenship.

"At Illumina, we work tirelessly to improve human health. It's a mindset that extends to everything we do," said Pat Leckman, chief people officer of Illumina. "We question, we discover, we act. Whether solving for everyday challenges or the most pressing problems in genomics, everyone on our team looks beyond the obvious to find a new way – from scientific breakthrough to protecting the planet. When you continuously turn ideas into innovations, the possibilities are everywhere, and the future is what you make it."

Commitment to sustainability

To compile the World's Most Sustainable Companies list, TIME evaluated thousands of companies around the world. Illumina ranked second overall in the United States, and third in the global Pharmaceuticals & Biotechnology Industry category. According to TIME's methodology, selections were based on more than 20 key performance indicators related to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices.

Sustainability is part of Illumina's commitment to advance the power of genomics and core to its practices, spanning its product development, operations, and supply chain. In its 2024 corporate social responsibility (CSR) report, the company reported an 80% reduction in packaging since 2019, and that 100% of its global electricity consumption came from renewable sources for the third consecutive year.

Last year, the company launched a new benchtop sequencer, the MiSeq i100 Series, with 85% less packaging than the original MiSeq System. Its consumables can be shipped and stored at room temperature, contributing to an overall 35% lower carbon footprint* compared to the original MiSeq. Additionally, Illumina empowers customers to unlock innovative solutions to the planet's most pressing issues through genomics.

Commitment to employee experience

For the Best Companies to Work For list, U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 5000 leading companies across six metrics: quality of pay and benefits, work-life balance and flexibility, job and company stability, physical and psychological comfort, belonging and esteem, and career opportunities and professional development. For more details on how the metric scores were calculated, see U.S. News' methodology.

"The most fulfilling work is often the hardest. And at Illumina, we are solving some of the biggest issues facing humanity. The demands are substantial, but the outcomes are deeply rewarding," Leckman said. "Illumina is made up of extraordinary people and dedicated professionals, all-in to create a better world. This award reflects the hard work of our great employees."

This is the third consecutive year that Illumina has been recognized on this list.

The TIME and U.S. News & World Report awards come on the heels of Illumina's latest CSR report, which is available on Illumina's CSR website.

*Based on comparison of MiSeq reagent kits to MiSeq i100 reagent kits per 1 gigabase (Gb) of genetic code; measured in Global Warming Potential through an LCA aligned with the methodological requirements and guidelines of the ISO standards ISO 14040 (2006a) and ISO 14044 (2006b) on LCA and the GHG Protocol Product Life Cycle Accounting and Report Standard (WRI/WBCSD, 2011).
